Ford has officially unveiled the 2013 Mustang at the 2011 LA Auto Show, complete with its new nose. The design incorporates a more upright, prominent grille with redesigned fenders and a hood to match. Speaking of the hood, GT models feature functional heat extractors to keep the engine bay as cool as possible. That’s a good thing considering that the 5.0-liter V8 now produces 420 horsepower in the GT and 444 horsepower in the Boss 302. The Shelby name doesn’t come cheap. Vintage Shelby Mustangs and Cobras can command six or sometimes even seven figure sums. The current Shelby offerings are much cheaper – the GT350 is priced around $70,000 while the Ford-built GT500 is a little less expensive with a base price just short of $50,000 – although we still wouldn’t consider them attainable to the average guy with a mortgage and 2.5 kids.
Shelby sees that as a problem. The majority of its customers are the people who craved a GT500 or Cobra back when they were kids in the 1960s. The making of Vaughn Gittin Jr’s 1969 RTR-X Ford Mustang. Earlier this year, we headed out to California’s Willow Springs Raceway to see Vaughn Gittin Jr. play with his 1969 RTR-X Ford Mustang for the very first time. It took just a few minutes for Gittin and his pony car to get acquainted, then it was all sideways action and tire smoke for the next couple of hours.
We weren’t the only ones watching Gittin that day, though. A film crew had their lenses pointed at the RTR-X as well, getting footage for a video about the making of the car. That video, produced by Team Need for Speed, has now been released, and it provides a glimpse into what it took to build the car, along with the people behind the project. There’s also some great footage of Gittin doing his thing in the RTR-X at Willow Springs.

Buyers of the 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 are gettting a new freebie from Ford — a “track attack” program that teaches them how to harness those 444 horses.
The sessions will take place at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah, in what Ford is calling a “controlled environment.”
The one-day program includes sessions on cornering, braking and vehicle dynamic techniques.
DEARBORN, Michigan — Buyers of the 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 are getting a new freebie from Ford — a “track attack” program that teaches them how to harness those 444 horses.
“This is the first program of its kind from Ford,” said Mickey Matus, Ford Racing marketing manager, in a statement.
While high-end manufacturers often provide owners with such a perk, it is fairly unusual to see it bundled with a relatively affordable vehicle. The 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 starts at $41,105, including a $795 shipping charge. The Boss 302 is equipped with a 444-horsepower 5.0-liter V8 engine linked to a six-speed manual transmission.
Ford said Mustang Boss 302 owners would learn about the car in a “controlled environment.” The one-day sessions will take place at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah, and include training on cornering, braking and vehicle dynamic techniques.
Ford will provide a fleet of track-ready Boss 302s, so owners can leave their vehicles at home. The event includes a private reception and dinner at the Larry H. Miller Total Performance Museum, along with a private tour of Miller’s personal collection of high-performance Ford and Shelby vehicles. Travel and accommodations are not included. Helmets will be provided.
An upgrade to a second day of training costs extra. If you opt for the second day in a Ford Racing Mustang GT, expect to pay $995. To get a seat behind the wheel of a Ford Racing Mustang FR500S on the second day of training costs $1,395. You must be at least 16 to take advantage of the free program.
As you might expect, there’s even a graduation ceremony following the training session.

Ford Mustang under investigation for transmission issues. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation surrounding transmission issues in the 2011-12 Ford Mustang. NHTSA has received 32 complaints citing inability to shift into gears at speed. Around 26,000 Mustangs are being investigated because of these claims.
Regarding the 32 complaints, NHTSA filed this in its report:
Some reports allege incidents occurred while merging into high speed traffic and others allege that incidents occurred while turning left across oncoming traffic. Some complainants allege that the erratic shifting behavior almost caused a collision with adjacent vehicles.
The official investigation was opened on August 3rd. According to The Detroit News, a spokesperson from Ford Motor Company said that the automaker will fully cooperate with NHTSA regarding this matter.

The 24-year-old from Effingham, Illinois claimed the top prize in the 2011 Mustang Dream Giveaway, which means he actually needs to clear out two spaces. One spot will go to his brand-new 2012 Ford Mustang Patriot Edition Boss 302, while the other will be taken up by a completely restored 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 302. You read that correctly, Mr. Barker just won two Boss Mustangs.
According to Mustang Evolution, the pair of prizes in the 2011 Mustang Dream Giveaway were designed to rake in money that was then donated to benefit members of the armed forces. More specifically, those men and women returning home with traumatic injuries not covered by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs.
Barker will pick up both coupes at Ford’s global headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. His 2012 Boss 302 is a special edition that wears serial number one of one, and his restored 1969 Boss is one of only 46 built with Calypso Coral paint, a four-speed manual transmission and 3.91 gears. The icing on this already amazing cake? Parnelli Jones has signed the classic Mustang.

Comfort mode provides the least amount of road force felt through the §teering wheel and requires the least amount of steering effort, which is ideal for long, relaxing drives.
A standard mode also is available and is a balance between the comfort and sport settings. The settings are accessed and programmed through the message center.

Shelby American is considering resurrecting its “rent-a-racer” program that offers upgraded Mustang GTs for enthusiast-oriented consumers, AutoWeek has learned.
Likely timed to mark the storied company’s 50th anniversary, the program could launch as early as next spring. The cars would be offered in two traditional configurations: black and gold and white and gold. Power would come from the naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8, which makes 412 hp in the 2012 Mustang GT, and an automatic transmission.
The rental racers would continue the lineage of street-legal Shelbys available for short stints. In 1966, the company teamed with Hertz to produce 1,000 copies of the performance Mustang. Forty years later, the program came back, and the GT-H was popular with enthusiasts despite limited availability. The Shelby GT-H cars were later offered for sale.

Shelby hasn’t finalized the potential 2012 program and is gauging interest. Hertz has been Shelby’s historic partner for the rent-a-racer ventures. Hertz offers the Mustang GT in premium packaging for rental as part of it “Adrenaline” collection, but the Shelby hasn’t been available recently.
In addition to the eye-catching livery, Shelby also usually goosed the Mustangs with a bit of extra horsepower and body treatments. Look for similar elements if this modern program comes to fruition.
